Williams and her husband built the house 51 years ago when they were among the first on Piedmont Street. There were no streetlights, few neighbors. As the neighborhood grew up around them, the Williamses raised three daughters in the house and sent them all to college. A retired secretary and substitute teacher, Williams now spends her days cultivating her flowers and tending to her yard. I work on my yard three or four times a week, she says. Settles has lived in the two-story yellow house since 1962, when her grandparents bought the place. She inherited the house in 1990 and now lives there with her husband, a retired airline customer service representative, and their 14-year-old son. New neighbors do move in, but the street has stayed much as it was when she was growing up. The Saulsbys built the house in 1963 when they were both school teachers in their 20s. There was a time when George and Deloris enjoyed going through the Parade of Homes every year. He thought they were just looking at what's new in home construction. She thought they were looking for a place with a bigger kitchen and larger closets.
