Local comic creators are taking the challenge at Artists' Mediums in Williston!

24 Hour Comics Day celebrates it's fourth year as an international effort this October 20th, 2007.
What is a 24 hour comic?
It's a challenge: one cartoonist tries to create a full 24 page comic, normally months of work, in 24 straight hours. As soon as pen touches paper, the clock starts ticking! The goal is to have the experience of trying. It's a creative exercise that can teach you a lot about what you're capable of.
Artists' Mediums of Williston is taking the leap to host the event in our store, and we will be open the full 24 hours! There are spots for about ten artists, and so far we have:

Robert Brunelle, Jericho

Evan Cook, Burlington

Richard Evans, Underhill

Lindsay Goodreau,

Michelle Harshbarger, South Burlington

Armando Veve, South Burlington

Bob Marney,

Jack Workman, Williston

Will Workman, Williston

The public is invited to come and see the creative process in action. We will have some space set aside for those who want to join in for a short time but aren't up for the full 24 hour commitment.
You don't have to be a good artist to participate. It's a lot of fun to do, even if you use stick figures to tell your story.

For more information on the Vermont location, call Artists' Mediums at (802) 879-1236.

Cows produce energy Seven-hundred St. Albans cows are making more than milk today – they’re making electricity.

The Dave and Cathy Montagne Farm became the latest to join the CVPS Cow Powerâ„¢ program Wednesday, generating electricity from cow manure and helping to solve numerous environmental challenges in the process. They have the capacity to handle manure from up to 1,200 cows.

“Cow Power is an opportunity for farmers to significantly reduce their environmental impact while creating clean, renewable energy,” farm owner David Montagne said. “Like the emergence of automated milking and the bulk milk tank decades ago, CVPS Cow Power™ has the potential to change the way Vermont dairy farms do business. This will make our farm stronger.”

The Montagne Farm is the fourth to join the program, preceded by Blue Spruce Farm in Bridport, Pleasant Valley Farm in Berkshire and Green Mountain Dairy in Sheldon. Over 4,400 customers have enrolled, making Cow Power is one of the fastest-growing renewable energy programs in the country.

Co-Owner David Montagne grew up on his grandparents’ farms until his parents bought one in 1965. When his parents bought and moved to another farm in 1975, Montagne began to run their old farm. As time went on, he and his wife Cathy purchased the farm, and it grew from 80 cows to the nearly 700 they have now.

The farm produces over 15 million pounds of milk a year, and is expected to produce 1.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year.

“That’s enough energy to supply about 200 homes around the clock,” CVPS spokesman Steve Costello said. “This project will have direct, sustainable benefits for Vermont.”

To create energy, manure and other agricultural waste are held in a sealed concrete tank at the same temperature as a cow’s stomach, 101 degrees. Bacteria digest the volatile components, creating methane and killing pathogens and weed seeds. The methane, which is roughly 20 times more harmful than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere, fuels an engine/generator.

CVPS customers can choose to receive all, half or a quarter of their electrical energy through Cow Power, and pay a premium of 4 cents per kilowatt hour. It goes to participating farm-producers, to purchase renewable energy credits when enough farm energy isn’t available, or to the CVPS Renewable Development Fund. The fund provides grants to farm owners to develop on-farm generation. Farm-producers are also paid 95 percent of the market price for all of the energy sold to CVPS.

Cow Power program manager David Dunn said he expects three more farms to begin producing Cow Power within the next year. “We continue to build a demand from customers, giving farm owners the confidence to build these systems,” Dunn said. “Ultimately, we expect to have about a dozen farms on-line by the end of 2010.”

“Demand continues to grow every week, as more Vermonters learn how valuable Cow Power can be, both economically and environmentally,” Costello said. “Manure is a steady fuel source on our Vermont farms.”
